In 1986, he was promoted to the position of director for the 1987 game Policenauts, making him one of the first Western developers to work on a Metal Gear title. After directing Metal Gear, Kojima became a producer for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake in 1990, and became a director for Metal Gear Solid in 1998. In 2000, he went on to direct MGS3: Snake Eater.
