Hideki Yukawa (1922-2008) was a Japanese theoretical physicist. He is best known for his work on the strong nuclear force and the meson theory, but also contributed to theoretical physics in other areas such as neutrino oscillations, QCD, and the Higgs mechanism. His research interests spanned elementary particle physics, quantum field theory, statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics, astrophysics, quantum gravity theory (he is best known for his early work on the Higgs mechanism), and thermodynamics. Yukawa was born in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan
He earned his doctorate at Osaka Imperial University in 1947 under Hideki Yukawa. During World War II he was recruited by the Imperial Japanese Army to study with Isidore Fainzilber at the University of Chicago. He returned to Osaka after the war and received an academic appointment there.
