Hellen Keller was born in the small town of Tuscumbia, Alabama, in 1880. She was the seventh of nine children. Keller began working at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., where she met her husband, Dr. Benjamin M. Keller.

He was also a blind man, and together they established the School for the Blind at Vineland, New Jersey. It would continue to operate until 1951. Keller spent her last years teaching after she became legally blind in 1931, when she was only 29 years old.

She died on June 1, 1968, at age 88.
