Hector Carsewell Macpherson was born in 1853 at Mont-Saint-Michel, France. He was an educator and an English professor before becoming a writer. His first literary work was his play "The House of Cards" (1894). This was followed by "The Winning Combination" (1897), "A New Era" (1901), and "The Mating Birds" (1904)
The latter work has been translated into thirty languages, including Japanese. In 1905 he traveled to Japan as a reporter for the London Times. He wrote "In the Land of the Rising Sun" (1907) and later published "Japan: The Ancient Empire" (1911) and "The Dragon of Japan" (1916).
