Hazel Scott was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in the Boston area. She received her B.A. from Wellesley College and an M.S. in Library Science from Boston University
Her career has spanned over four decades and included professional librarianship, private research and reference services, and editorial and publishing experience. She is a member of the American Library Association and served as president of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter (1990-91). For many years she was a member of the Board of Directors for the American Society for Information Science (ASIS) and has been active in her local ASIS chapter since 1971.
She was honored with the ASIS Honor Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2006.
