Hassan Fathy was born in 1931. After his secondary education, he attended Cairo University where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree. Graduating with honors, he continued his studies at the University of London and obtained a Masters of Science degree in Geography. He joined the Faculty of Geography at Ain Shams University in 1953 and held various positions until he became Professor and Dean of the School of Geography in 1972
In 1981, as President, he established Ain Shams University as a modern university with a strong academic staff and an active student body. In 1990, as Minister of Education, he transformed the State's educational system from an M-6 curriculum to a modern curriculum for all levels. In 1994, as President, Fathy initiated a comprehensive reform program to improve university administration through professionalization and decentralization.
