Cushing had an illustrious career during which he published many groundbreaking books and articles on surgery and neuroanatomy, including The Frontal Lobes (1925), which demonstrated that the frontal lobes were more important than previously thought. He received his honorary degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948.

Cushing was elected to membership in numerous learned societies including the American Medical Association, American Neurological Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was a charter member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. In recognition of his many contributions to medicine, Congress awarded him the Medal for Merit in Medicine from President Roosevelt in 1939.
