Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Haruo Shirane is a graduate of the University of Tokyo and a former professor at Hokkaido University. He has been a visiting lecturer at a number of universities, including Harvard, Yale, University of Michigan, and Columbia. He has written numerous short stories and essays on Japanese literature, as well as a book on the life and work of Adachi Keizo, one of his grandfathers.
