He was employed by the University of Chicago until 1938, when he joined the faculty of Columbia University. In 1945 he became Chairman of the Economics Department at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a post he held until his retirement in 1973. During his career at Penn he taught courses on economic history, industrial organization, and international trade.

He also remained active in academic administration, serving as Dean of the Graduate School from 1955 to 1960 and again from 1965 to 1970. Harold Geneen was also a prolific writer. His publications covered a wide range of topics in economics and business administration, including The Theory of Industrial Organization (1951), The Economics of Imperfect Competition (1956), and The Economics of Shortage (1970).
