Hannah Senesh, an Israeli Jew, was an officer in the Haganah; one of her last jobs was to create a suicide unit in the Jewish underground. Her mission was to lead a group of soldiers into the forest and blow themselves up with dynamite in order to capture the German paratroopers who were invading Palestine. She was caught, tortured and ordered to be executed by firing squad; she survived the ordeal, however, and went on to become a leader in the communist party in Palestine.
