She attended Wayne State University on a basketball scholarship before dropping out to pursue an acting career. Berry was subsequently discovered by an agent while walking down Detroit's Detroit Riverwalk on January 21, 2000. Later that year, she appeared on the cover of "Vibe" magazine with rapper Eminem, who had written "Hallelujah" for her.
Berry made her film debut in the crime thriller movie "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" (1999), which was critically panned but later became one of the highest grossing independent films of all time. She then starred in the box office successes "Bad Boys" (1995) and "Swordfish" (2001), for which she received nominations for both the Golden Globe Award and Academy Award for Best Actress.
