Gregory Boyington was the most successful American naval aviator (he flew over 1,600 combat missions) in World War II. He is best known for becoming the highest-scoring pilot in the Pacific theater, flying more than 100 combat missions before he was shot down near the end of the war. He spent over nine months as a prisoner of war, survived seventeen days (and seventeen nights) on an ice floe to Siberia, and became a U.S. citizen after the war.
