Girish Kohli is an Indian filmmaker and writer who has worked in many genres of Indian cinema, including Hindi, English and Marathi. He is the son of legendary director and producer Manmohan Desai and actress Shabana Azmi. He directed the blockbuster film "Gangs of Wasseypur" (2012), which was India's official entry for Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 2013 Academy Awards.
He directed the films "Bombay Talkies" (2013) and "Sarfarosh" (2015) in English language. He also directed the Marathi film "Gandu" (2012)

Kohli was born in Mumbai to Shabana Azmi and Manmohan Desai, who are known for their work in Hindi cinema. His father is of Gujarati Parsi background while his mother is from an upper-class Bengali Hindu family.
He grew up in Bandra, where he spent most of his childhood between his maternal grandparents' house and his parents' house on his father's sets.
