George Stewart McGovern, Sr., was a United States Senator from South Dakota for thirty years. He was the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1972 and 1976. He was Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations (1977-1981)
He is the only United States Senator to serve on all three major war-related committees (Army, Navy, and Air Force; Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations; and Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence). McGovern was born in Waupun, Wisconsin, August 14, 1922. His parents were George Stewart McGovern (1893-1971) and Elaine McGovern (1895-1987).
He graduated from Waupun High School in 1939 and received his B.A. degree from St. John's College in 1941.
