George Porter was born in Warren, Pennsylvania in 1799. He was a prolific writer in the field of natural history, and he published his first book, The Botany of Niagara Falls in 1838. He contributed to the Smithsonian Institute, which in 1847 established the first museum of natural history in America. Porter was a member of the American Philosophical Society and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
He is buried in the Congressional Cemetery.
