George Herbert Walker Bush was born March 12, 1924 in Milton, Massachusetts. He grew up in Connecticut and Texas and then attended Yale University before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, Bush earned a degree from Yale and an MBA from Harvard Business School
In 1951 he joined the family business, H.J. Heinz Company, where he eventually served as president and CEO for more than a decade. He was elected vice president under President Richard Nixon in 1968 and became president upon Nixon's resignation in 1974.
In 1980, Bush ran for vice president on the Republican ticket with Ronald Reagan, who defeated Jimmy Carter in a landslide election that November. In 1988 he ran for president on his own and was elected to a term of office that began in 1989 and ended in 1993. In between his presidential terms he served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1986 to 1988 and as a director of the CIA from 1990 to 1992.
