George Darley was born in 1885 in the Ozarks of Missouri. He moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 1907. For two years he had a job on the Fayetteville Tribune staff, but his life's work had begun when he read Napoleon Hill's book Think and Grow Rich. The book had a profound effect on Darley, who wrote his first article for the paper when he still in high school, in 1912
When World War I broke out, Darley enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1918 and served in Europe until 1922. He spent most of the rest of his life in Arkansas, where he died in 1957.
His career spanned more than fifty years and included positions as Washington correspondent for several daily newspapers, United Press International news editor, foreign editor of the Associated Press in New York City, syndicated columnist for Hearst Magazine, founder and editor of the Arkansas Gazette, and associate editor of Saturday Evening Post Magazine.
