George Ayittey, a medical doctor and professor of economics, was born in Monrovia, Liberia. He attended the University of Liberia and the University of Ghana, becoming the first person from his country to reach those universities. He has been a fellow at the Freedom Research Foundation, founded by Samuel E. Huntingdon, and was a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University
He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Geneva and New York University.
