George Armstrong Custer (July 9, 1839 – June 15, 1876) was a career United States Army officer and American military leader. During the American Civil War, Custer served with distinction under William Tecumseh Sherman and became one of the most highly regarded Union cavalry commanders. Early in the war, he led a division during the First Battle of Bull Run and fought in numerous other engagements. He served with distinction during operations in Virginia and Tennessee, earning the nickname "Boy General" for his boldness and tenacity in battle
