Wells was born in New York City on March 29, 1852. He attended Columbia College in New York City where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1873. He became a newspaperman, working for the Philadelphia Press and the New York World before becoming associate editor of Harper's Magazine in 1880.
