Gelila Bekele was born in a remote village in Tigray, Ethiopia in 1984. She went to primary school in a local elementary school, and high school at Gondar College. In 2003, she moved to Addis Ababa where she studied at the Institute of Business Administration. In 2009, she graduated with a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Addis Ababa. In 2011, she joined the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing as an Urban Planner for the Kombolcha District. Since then she has been working for various government departments including the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
She is also currently pursuing her doctorate degree at the University of Addis Ababa on 'Zonal Planning and Land Management for Sustainable Growth'.
