Gaston Caperton was the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1975 to 1986. During his time on the bench, he helped to create the law governing "intervening rights." He served as a member of the Executive Committee of the American Law Institute and as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants. He received a B.A. from Washington and Lee University in 1957, a J.D
from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1959, and a LL.M. from Columbia Law School in 1963. In 1962, he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where he read Natural Sciences and graduated with a B.A., followed by an M.A., in Philosophy in 1964.
In 1975, he received an honorary Doctorate from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia for his service to public service and the legal system in the United States and internationally during his career as a lawyer and judge.
