Gao Xingjian (1934- ), a native of China's Shandong province, has written more than thirty-five works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and film criticism. He has won the National Literature Prize in 1986 and the Cai Yuanpei Prize in 1994. His writing career began in 1957 with his first story, "The Beggar," which was published in the literary magazine "New Youth" under the pen name Li Qiong. Gao's major works include A Tale of Three Cities (1960), City of Life and Death (1990), A Time for Love (1991), Silent Souls (1992), Madman Dreams of His Excellencies (1996), The Most Despicable Act (2000), A Good Man Can Get It (2001) and The Chinese Lover(2003)
