Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BC - 44BC) was a Roman general and politician who played a key role in the conquest of Gaul and is also known for his alleged involvement in the Roman civil wars. He began his political career as a military commander and was elected consul in 59 BC. After Octavian (later Augustus) and Marcus Junius Brutus deposed the Roman monarchy and founded the Roman Republic, Caesar and Pompey were the only two men popular enough to oppose them. Their rivalry ultimately led to their battle at Pharsalus, where Caesar won, thus becoming the first Roman dictator
Caesar's plans for further conquests in Asia were frustrated by the defeat at Pharsalus. He sought to conquer Parthia but was again defeated by Mithridates VI of Pontus, who proceeded to invade Rome in 48 BC. Caesar fled to Egypt, where he sought support from Mark Antony.
