Fritz Sauckel, a native of Carlsbad, was a member of the Nazi Party from 1930 to 1945. From 1942 to 1944, he was the Reich's "Chief Plenipotentiary for Labor Deployments." Sauckel obtained the rank of Colonel in the SS and was responsible for drafting thousands of slave laborers from all over Europe. In his office, he was called "the man who sent twelve million men to their deaths." In 1948, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in the Holocaust. The following year, he died in a Soviet prison hospital.
