Fridtjof Nansen (22 April 1861 – 25 December 1930) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat and politician. He was a pioneer of polar exploration, serving as Secretary-General of the International Polar Year in 1882–83. He led four expeditions to Greenland between 1888 and 1896, which established scientific stations in the interior of the ice-covered island, and was the first person to traverse Greenland north to south (1891–92). He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922
