Fred Hampton (February 21, 1940 – December 10, 1969) was an American political activist and leader of the Black Panther Party. He served as chairman of the Illinois State Committee of the Black Panther Party and as one of its two national committeemen. The Chicago Police Department and Cook County state's attorney's office considered him a prime suspect in the 1969 murder of a police officer, but he was never convicted.
