Franz Boas (August 27, 1858 – February 27, 1942) was a German-American cultural anthropologist who "was one of the most significant figures in the development of American anthropology". He was the founder of the subfield of cultural anthropology known as cultural materialism. He also had a significant influence on 20th-century anthropology through his mentoring and collaboration with Alfred L. Kroeber, Ruth Benedict, Margaret Mead, and Edward Sapir.
