He was a member of the United States Foreign Service for 14 years, completing assignments in China, Libya, Algeria, Romania, Nicaragua, South Korea, Egypt, Kuwait, Iraq, Bosnia-Herzegovina and in the former Soviet Union. Mr. Gaffney has been a full-time writer since 1993.
He is chairman of the Center for Security Policy in Washington D.C., an independent non-profit think tank that promotes peaceful relations between nations by studying international security issues. He is also publisher of "The New American", a weekly newspaper published in Washington D.C., which focuses on national security issues affecting Americans today.
