Francisca Olivia was born in Mexico City to a family of musicians and linguists. Her musical talent was nurtured from an early age and she began singing professionally at age seven. At age eleven, she made her professional debut with the Radio Television Union of Mexico (UTEM) and sang under the stage name of "Francisca Olivia." She continued her musical career as a child star and, at the age of fifteen, she won first place in a national competition sponsored by the Mexican government. She became a household name in Mexico and Latin America during the 1930's, performing over fifty major concerts each year throughout North America and Europe
