Francis Scott Key (December 11, 1779 – October 7, 1843) was an American lawyer, patriot, poet, and songwriter. His most famous compositions are the lyrics to the national anthem of the United States, The Star-Spangled Banner. He is also known for "Defense of Fort Mifflin," a poem written in 1814 which later became the U.S. national anthem following a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931.
