Flora Kidd was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in 1885. She graduated from the University of Glasgow with a B.A. and studied art in Paris at the Académie Julian with Maurice Denis and Pierre Bonnard. She published her first book, The Art of Prose (1928), and quickly became a leading figure in the literary world, both in Britain and on the Continent
Her work was considered especially innovative for its combination of archaic styles and modernist techniques. She traveled widely and painted with a rare intensity that gave her work an unusual quality of light and shadow.
