Fitzjames Stephen (1796-1861) was an English clergyman and scholar, who began his career in 1811 as a youthful curate in the English parish of Helston. He became the Vicar of St. Peter's, Manchester, in 1824; Canon of Manchester in 1827; and Dean of Manchester in 1841. Early in his literary career he wrote some volumes of sermons for which he received little recognition
