Born Fay Wray in New York City, she was discovered by director Jesse Lasky while working in a department store. She was signed to a contract with Paramount Pictures and made her film debut in the 1929 production "The Bat". She became known as "the girl with the wonderful eyes" when she made her first appearance in the horror film "King Kong" (1933).
