He graduated from the University of the Punjab in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After working as a teacher and journalist in Lahore, Faiz joined the Pakistan Army in 1941 and worked with the Directorate of Publicity and Propaganda until 1947. He then became a member of the editorial board of Dawn and remained there until 1955 when he left to start his own newspaper, Daily Express.

In 1958 he became the editor-in-chief of Daily Express and remained in this position until 1966 when he left Pakistan to live in London where he published several critical essays on Pakistani politics and society under the pen name "Faiz Ahmed".
