F. Matthias Alexander was born in 1826 in Riga, Russia. He received his medical degree in Berlin, Germany in 1853. In 1855, he emigrated to the United States where he practiced medicine until he retired in 1896
He was an avid student of psychology and wrote many papers on the subject. His most noted contribution was his "Neuro-Psychology," which he wrote with Prof. William James of Harvard University.
It is considered to be the most influential work on the subject of "mental hygiene" ever written.
