Eugene Fields was born in 1867 in Athens, Alabama. He was the youngest of four children. His mother died when he was a small boy and his father remarried. His childhood was spent in a cotton-mill town, a city of just a few thousand people, and a few miles from the state line between Alabama and Georgia
Things were very different then. Children were often left to live with grandparents or other relatives, and Eugene's life was no different. The family lived in two small houses on opposite sides of the street in one of the small towns in south Georgia.
Eugene left school at the age of ten to work in the cotton mills for five cents an hour, but continued to go to school in the evenings after work for another half-hour or so. He also began writing when he was ten years old for neighborhood papers where he wrote poems, stories, and even humorous lyrics about his fellow millworkers.
