Things were very different then. Children were often left to live with grandparents or other relatives, and Eugene's life was no different. The family lived in two small houses on opposite sides of the street in one of the small towns in south Georgia.

Eugene left school at the age of ten to work in the cotton mills for five cents an hour, but continued to go to school in the evenings after work for another half-hour or so. He also began writing when he was ten years old for neighborhood papers where he wrote poems, stories, and even humorous lyrics about his fellow millworkers.
