Estée Lauder was born in New York City in 1906, the only child of immigrants from Russia. At five years old, she suffered a serious illness that left her blind for over a year. After recovering, she began to assist her mother with household chores. At ten years old, Estée became fascinated by how women could change the appearance of their faces with makeup
She began experimenting with makeup for herself and was soon creating her own cosmetics. The young Estée made so many attempts to get rich quickly that her family gave up on the idea. When Estée was 20 years old, she got married to Joseph Lauder, a Hungarian immigrant who had gone to America to make his fortune in the garment industry. Together they opened a small shop in New York City selling handmade perfumes and cosmetics.
As their business grew, they relocated to larger premises and ultimately built a factory that employed 250 people making more than 1,000 different kinds of products. Estée's career continued to flourish, but her husband's did not. He died of pneumonia when Estée was only thirty-two years old. Her grief over his death inspired her to develop an effective line of skincare products for women.
She thus founded the company that would become known as "Lauder." Today, Lauder is one of the world's leading beauty companies, with more than 3,000 stores worldwide and sales exceeding $5 billion annually. Since its inception in 1946, Lauder has offered consumers all-natural products that are safe and effective.
