Esai Morales was born in Harlem, New York City, on April 3, 1968. Esai is an actor, singer, and author. He has appeared on Broadway in "Rent", for which he received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical; "Whose Life Is It Anyway?", "The Fantasticks", "The Ritz"; Off-Broadway in the musicals "Big River" and "Catch Me If You Can"; and in New York stage productions of "The Heidi Chronicles", "Rent", and "Spring Awakening". Esai is known for his roles as Detective Antonio “Tony” Diaz on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (season 5) and as Lieutenant Jerry Ortiz on the television series Men of a Certain Age (season 1, season 2)
