Errol Anthony Smythe was born in 1936 in Jamaica. He began writing poetry at an early age and began publishing poetry in the 1950s. His first one-act play, "The Invisible Man" was performed in 1962. He published his first book of short stories, "A Short Walk to the River" in 1971
His other works include "The Arrow That Never Was" (1978); "The Other Side of Midnight" (1987) and "The Magician's Apprentice" (1995). His work has been translated into Japanese, German, Greek, French, Swedish, Italian, Portuguese, Estonian and Estonian. He has received numerous awards including the Jamaican Order of Merit for Literature.
