Ernesto Cardenal (born November 17, 1926), is a Guatemalan novelist, poet and political activist. Fleeing the atrocities of the Guatemalan Civil War, he became a founding member of the Communist Party of Guatemala in 1960. He was one of the key activists in the Guatemalan Revolution and he was the first president of the National Assembly during the 1974 Revolution. He was twice elected president of Guatemala (1975–1978 and 1982–1986)
In 1983 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work towards peace and reconciliation and his fight to preserve and promote human rights. He lives in Guatemala City with his wife, writer and anti-war activist Isabel Allende.
