Ellsworth Kelly was born in Kansas in 1912 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. He moved to New York in 1936 and exhibited there at the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, and at the same time held a teaching position at Cooper Union. He became a full professor in 1947 and retired in 1986, continuing to teach while working on his own art. Kelly's work has been extensively exhibited since he began his painting career in the 1930s.
