Elizabeth Blackwell was born in 1821 in Norwich, England. She received her medical degree from the University of Geneva in 1847 before moving to the United States where she founded New York Infirmary for Women and Children. She described her work as "the best philanthropic work I have ever done." She later became president of New York Infirmary for Women and Children, Dean of Women at Wellesley College, and professor at the New York Medical College.
