Croydon died two years later, after which she became a teacher and writer of juvenile books. In 1882, she began a prolific career as a weekly newspaper advice columnist for The New York Evening Telegram under the pen name "Mrs. X," and it was during this time that she wrote "The Young Mother's Guide," which has been called the first book written specifically for new mothers.

Later books included "The Young Wife's Companion," "The Young Mother's Cook Book," "The Young Mother's Friend," and "The Young Man's Book." In 1900 she published "Womanhood Without Bitterness", which is considered one of the most important works published by an American woman in the late nineteenth century.
