Actor Eli Wallach was born in Brooklyn on Jan. 27, 1920. He began acting in the early 1940s after being hired by a friend of his father's, who was running the Shubert Theater Group. Wallach had to leave acting briefly during World War II because of his work with the U.S
Navy, but he returned to Broadway in 1947 with "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial." The following year he performed in "Tovarich." During the 1950s Wallach starred in several low-budget Westerns and thrillers, including "The Magnificent Yankee" (1955), "Ride Like the Wind" (1959) and "The Story of G.I. Joe" (1960). Wallach is perhaps best known for his appearance as Mollie Maguire in "Godfather Part II." He also portrayed General Patton in the film, "Patton."
