Edmund Waller (1555 – 1635) was an English poet, courtier, dramatist and essayist. He was the younger brother of Sir Allen Apsley. Waller is best known for his philosophical poems, notably The Rule o f Thumb, which was published in 1651. This work influenced the works of Alexander Pope, Thomas Gray, William Wordsworth and John Keats
