Edmondo de Amicis is an Italian writer, historian and journalist. He was born in 1846 in Rome, where he was educated at the Collegio Romano. He became Professor of Italian literature at the University of Rome in 1877, and in 1894 he was elected Senator for life by the Italian Chamber of Deputies. He is best known for his historical novel The Story of a New Name (1888), which was adapted into the film The Nightingale (1999), directed by Giuseppe Tornatore.
