Eddie Adams was born in 1918 in the Bronx, New York. He joined the United States Navy at age 18 and served as a combat photographer during World War II. He was wounded by shrapnel during the war and received numerous awards for his bravery, including the Bronze Star with Combat "V". After the war he became a reporter for the "New York Herald Tribune" and then worked as a freelance photographer for Life magazine
His photographs have appeared on the covers of Time, Newsweek, The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and other leading magazines. He has won numerous awards including The Pulitzer Prize. He has published more than twenty books, including Under Fire (with Jimmy Breslin), who's who in American Photography, and Eddie Adams: A Photographer's Life.
