Douglas Alexander is a British politician. He served as Secretary of State for International Development from 1999 to 2003 and Leader of the House of Commons from 2005 to 2007, and was Leader of the Labour Party from 2007 until his resignation in 2010. He was one of the most prominent advocates for the Iraq War and has been criticised by some for failing to oppose it adequately. He resigned as leader of the Labour party on 14 August 2008 and subsequently announced that he would not contest the next leadership election, which was set to take place in October 2009.
