Dorothea Brande was a German-American physician who worked in hospitals and clinics in New York City. In 1902, she published a paper in the medical journal The Lancet about the case of a woman with a uterine tumor who had been cured by intravaginal application of castor oil. After her death in 1911, Brande's self-published book, "Castor Oil: A Report on Its Therapeutic Value," was posthumously published in 1912. In it she described the case study and argued for castor oil as an effective treatment for vaginal conditions.
